The election originally held on November 21, 2015 was declared inconclusive due to the huge number of voided votes, and another drama was thrown into the mix with the death of the APC Candidate Prince Abubakar Audu on the same day.
INEC also declared that there would be supplementary election in 91 polling units spread across 19 local governments. The councils are Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Ibaji, Ida, Igala-Mela, Okehi, Odohun, Ijimu, Kabba/Bunu, Lokoja, Ofu, Olamaboro, Okene, Omala and Yagba West and Kogi Kodokafi.
Three days after the logjam, INEC announced that the APC can replace Audu, and fixed Saturday December 5 for supplementary election. APC decided to chose Bello who came second in the APC primaries as its new candidate despite strong opposition from Hon. James Abiodun Faleke who was the running mate to the late Audu.
According to Returning Officer, Professor Emmanuel Kucha, Bello was declared duly elected after fulfilling all constitutional requirements.
